I know that I have already mentioned the Pont du Gard, but I feel that it is most deserving of a few more words.
You drive towards Meze and carry on (N113) until you pick up the motorway (A9-E15) as though you are driving back home towards Lyon, the journey will take you a little over one hour from Marseillan where you then turn off (exit no. 23) and follow the signs to Pont du Gard.

Great view of the Roman masterpiece
I would say that having made the journey to the south of France, to not visit this site would be a pity. When you arrive you will find a large parking area, access to the Pont du Gard is free, but when you purchase a ticket for 'La Grande Expo', which also should not be missed, you are given a free parking ticket for your visit here.

To reach the Aqueduct you walk along a concrete road past ancient olive trees, and there it stands. At this point you may gasp, because in front of you is this structure which has changed very little since it was completed in 50 AD, standing at a height of 48 metres it spans the river below, and when in use it carried the water from its source at Uzes for a distance of 50km to the town of Nimes. The most amazing feature of this magnificent piece of Roman engineering is that most of it is underground - valleys were spanned and hills tunnelled through, giving an average slope of just 24cm per KM. It was nominated as a world heritage site in 1985.
You may also take a picnic along in order that you may fully enjoy this wonderful place

Once inside the Grande Expo, you will see a large tableau explaining how this monument was constructed, with original artifacts, visual and sound effects. Close your eyes and you are there. In July and August there is also a light display which brings out the magic of the Pont du Gard against its natural background.
